Celebrities in the news: I’m sure by now that we have all heard about Wayne Rooney and his hair transplant, as this seems to be more major news than that of the economy.
However Lady Gaga is in the news this week, as she has opted for turquoise hair! I wonder if this will be a celebrity trend of unusual hair colours or will Lady Gaga be on her own with this trend?

Kids donate hair to Charity: In Huntsville, Alabama Franklin Key aged 12 has had his hair cut off for the Locks of Love Charity. He started growing her hair back in 2007 and reached the 10 inch length recently. He said, “I took good care of it, got it trimmed every 8 to 10 weeks and kept it brushed. While growing my hair out I did get a lot of teasing and a lot of times being called a girl. I sometimes got frustrated by this, but I knew that in the end I would make someone smile and happy because they didn’t have hair, but now they will have hair. After a couple of years of this I actually got used to it, and calmly explained that actually I was a boy, but I had a mission of growing my hair out 10 inches to donate to locks of love for kids who couldn’t grow hair.”

In Hermiston, Oregon Kendall Cooper aged 8 decided she wanted to do something to help out children who had had surgeries or medical problems and donated 10 inches of her
blonde hair to Locks of Love.  “I just wanted to help out,” the 8-year-old said. “It’s nice to help people when they’ve had something bad happen, and I know what it’s like because I have some relatives who have had to have surgery.” Kendall said that she had heard about
the problem when one of her cousins donated hair, and she decided she would do the same thing. It took almost two years for her to grow her hair out long enough to have shoulder-length locks after the cut. “I’ve been measuring it constantly to make sure it was the right length,” mum Brenda Cooper said. “The first thing she said when I said it was long enough was to ask if people can donate more than once.”

American troops donate hair for charity: American troops serving at Camp Victory in Iraq recently participated in Operation Shear Love, in which they donated their hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that provides hair pieces to children with medical hair loss. This is the first Locks of Love donation drive that has occurred in Iraq, said Tech. Sgt. Amber Hotzfeld, an intelligence analyst, Joint Interrogation and Debriefing Detachment in Iraq, and one of the organizers of the event who donated 11 inches of hair. All of the troops, who each donated a minimum of 10 inches of hair for a total of almost eight feet, did so with their hearts going out to the children who need the hair more than they do. Hotzfeld said that due to logistics and the drawdown of forces, this is the only Operation Shear Love in which she will be able to organize and
participate. “This is a beautiful cause,” said Staff Sgt. Amaryllis Rivera, a unit supply sergeant with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 325th Military Intelligence, who donated 13 inches of hair. “I really wish more people were willing to participate.”

In Plainfield, Mitchigan more than forty girls from Northview High School donated their hair to their local ‘Wigs 4 Kids’ programme, which donates hair to children suffering from cancer or other diseases. At Westside Elementary School in Pittsburg, third grade teacher Kerstin Womble lost 11 inches of hair in a donation to Locks of Love. Womble has let her hair grow six inches since last October just so she could cut it off. I was inspired, she said, by her mother, Connie, who is a cancer survivor. “She went through chemo, had to do the wig and the whole nine yards,” Womble said. “This year when I started to teach third grade, I decided to donate it.”

Shop clerk hit during fight over wig: According to newspaper reports, in Virginia Beach, Virginia a clerk at a beauty supply store was assaulted during a fight over a wig last Tuesday. Steve Lee, owner of Ace Beauty and Wigs said he was in the back when a man, woman, and child came through the door. Lee said his wife, who had a video camera, noticed the woman about to steal some wigs, so she did everything she could to stop it from happening, while also getting it on camera whilst trying to get her items back. As she tried to grab the wigs back, the suspect became violent and started to fight Lee’s wife in front of the suspect’s young child, suffering a bruised and bloody face. Police said the
suspects were able to get away with the merchandise, but Lee said they left their dignity. “As parents, we have to teach our children morally which way we live by,” said Lee. Lee now hopes the fight caught on tape will help find who committed the crime. He said it’s not about the loss of money, but the lesson they need to be taught. “One thing I can’t tolerate was tha.t they were doing it with a child. It’s not acceptable,” said Lee.

Nationwide rise in theft of expensive human hair: There’s been a nationwide rise in theft of expensive human hair, the kind used for wigs and hair extensions, from salons and wholesale retailers across the United States. In the past two months alone, over tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of hair has been stolen in various robberies. In addition to the $150,000 (£93,000) Houston robbery this month, thieves have recently taken $10,000 in hair from a San Diego shop; $85,000 (£52,700) from a business in Missouri City, Tex.;
$10,000 from a shop in Dearborn, Michigan and $60,000 from a business in San Leandro, California. All the values were provided by the storeowners.  Law enforcement officials have been perplexed by the sudden increase in the thefts of hair and the violence that has accompanied some. Some agencies say they had been unaware of the trend before,
and others are still learning about it.  “That’s the first I’ve heard of it,” said Denise Ballew, a spokeswoman for the F.B.I., who oversees data related to property crimes. One ndication of how quickly the focus of some thieves has shifted to high end hair is the experience of the Beauty One hair supply store in Chicago: two years ago, thieves went after the store’s cash, but last month, they bypassed the register altogether and took just the hair, which was valued at $90,000. Detective Vito Ferro of the Chicago Police Department, who is investigating the April 24 robbery, said some recent hair thefts in the city appeared to be the work of people sophisticated enough to have taken custom orders. This is a story that e are following and will report any further information as we get it. Most of the robberies we hear about, those involved have been caught, but this type of crime is still on the increase.

We’ve had some more news on the wig shop shooting in Dearborn that we reported on back on 26th March (World wig new 8). According to reports in the Detroit Media, witnesses on Friday testified they were ordered into a back room and heard a gunshot that killed a beauty supply store owner during a robbery for expensive hair extensions. Monique Shepard said she stopped at the door when she saw a man pulling clothing off
the racks of the Sunrise Beauty Supply, 4920 Schaefer, on March 15. But the man saw her, she said. The man, whom she said was wearing a green sweatshirt, showed a gun and ordered her and another woman who was at the store into a back room. He asked if they called police and both said no and with that the man took their mobile phones and a total of $25 from them.

The man in the green sweatshirt was identified as Tanaka Jayvon Wells, of Detroit. Wells, 19, and Ronnie Lamont Matthews, 18, of Detroit are charged with felony murder and three counts of armed robbery in the slaying of store owner Jay Shin, 60. Wells also faces a
charge of felony firearm. Judge Richard Wygonik of 19th District Court ordered the men to stand trial in Wayne County Circuit Court. A May 20 arraignment in circuit court was set by Wygonik. Shin was shot to death during the robbery in which 80 packages of hair extensions worth about $10,000 were stolen. Mr. Shin died from a close-range gunshot to the head, according to testimony read from a medical examiner’s report by Cory Newman, Wayne County assistant prosecutor. The men are being held without bond in the Wayne County Jail.

Chemotherapy and wigs

For many people, hearing the news that you have Cancer are words that nobody wants to hear from any doctor, especially if you are a woman. There are many different forms of cancers and no matter which one you have been diagnosed with, there will be months of treatments ahead probably involving Chemotherapy. One of the side effects of having Chemotherapy is losing one’s hair and for women this is particularly hard. Many women pride themselves with their appearance and in particular their hair, so facing the prospect of losing it is a double blow of bad news.

Here at Wigtopia, we have many customers who contact us for a wig, just as their hair is starting to fall out following their first session of Chemotherapy and they are all naturally distressed. This distress can be prolonged as the wig they have chosen is not in stock for immediate delivery and there will be a short delay while the wig arrives. We want to avoid any unnecessary distress to all our clients at all costs. Many people do contact us early so we try and give them this advice.

As soon as you have been diagnosed with Cancer and told that you will need Chemotherapy, you must assume that all your hair will fall out and take steps well before your first treatment and be prepared for this event. This means getting a wig sorted out, and then to start wearing it well before your first treatment to get used to wearing one and being seen with a slightly different hair style. Doctors will tell you, that you may lose some or all of your own hair through this treatment and may advise you to use a cold cap to help reduce this effect. We hear mixed reports on these cold caps, and as no two people are the same and many will have different degrees of success with them. Therefore always assume the worst case scenario and have a wig on hand right from the start. Many people are surprised by the quickness that hair loss occurs following their first treatment and so many people are unprepared. There is nothing more frustrating at losing your hair and not being able to get the wig you need immediately, having to wait a few days for the item to arrive.

News teams in Houston are reporting another robbery at a wig shop called My Trendy Place, where $100,000 (£60,550) worth of wigs and hair extensions were taken. To make matters worse these wigs were put aside for a charity event this coming Saturday, where these items would be given free to Cancer patients and people with hair loss who need help like this. Store manager Lisa Amosu said, “It was definitely someone who knew what they were doing. Here I am trying to give and someone is taking from me and I’m trying to give. God is able and nothing that we do goes unpunished.” The thief gained access through a window cutting the alarm cables. Once inside he filled two giant duffle bags full of wigs and hair extensions and emerged less than eight minutes later with the stolen goods and was gone, crawling back out the section of window from which he gained entry. Police so far have no leads to follow up on.

However it was a different kind of robbery in Newark, New Jersey which made the news recently. It’s been reported that an attempted bank robbery didn’t quite go as planned as the robber tried to leave the bank with more than $47,000 (£28,480) grabbing a woman’s hair as he left. The woman was wearing a wig which became detached when she struggled free. A police officer wounded the robber, who appeared in federal court last Monday and was detained pending a bond hearing.

The store owner says about two years ago, thieves broke in, but only took cash.

Wearing a wig in hot weather

Wearing a wig for some people can be difficult due to their individual personal circumstances and varying lifestyles and many opt for wearing a headscarf instead. For those that wear wigs all year round, wearing a wig in hot sunny weather can pose some added problems for many. Nobody wears winter clothes in summer and with that nobody wears a woolly hat either or do they? We’ve now gone through winter and many people will look back in their minds and say that “despite the cold my head was always warm, due to wearing a wig.” Now that the warmer weather is hear, you might be thinking “wearing a wig is making me feel very hot, especially around the head. I hope it doesn’t get any hotter.” I think we are all saying that, especially as our homes are not air conditioned. So how do we cope with wearing a wig in hot weather and is there something we can do to make our lives easier by feeling cooler?

If I’m honest, no there is no simple solution to this issue. However doing the following might make a difference. Don’t sit in direct sunlight. This will only make you feel hotter, also the strong sunlight can fade the darker colours on some wigs and cause the wig fibers to dry out much faster altering the texture of the wig and reducing its length of usability. Always try and face the breeze whenever and wherever possible, as keeping a breeze on your face, reduces the likelihood of you overheating. There is nothing worse that sweating whilst wearing a wig, as the moisture will get under the band of the wig, especially at the front and can cause the wig to lift whilst being worn, making it less secure on your head. This can be a bigger problem with monofilament wigs as the polyurethane front will sit on a cushion of moisture. This will only make you feel even hotter, as the breeze will not properly reach your head, and will take longer for you to cool down.

Wigs don’t like very hot weather, so always ensure that you have a spare just in case, your wig does fade or dries noticeably and becomes unusable. There is nothing worse than having a problem and having to sort out a replacement in a hurry. We also find from customers that their wigs require washing more often due to the dry dust in the air combined with the effects of the weather.

Spate of robberies at wig shops in the U.S.A: According to ABC7 News in San Francisco, in San Leandro, California a bold robbery was caught by security cameras inside a San Leandro hair supply store and stole $50,000 (£30,600) worth of human hair. The owner posted surveillance video on YouTube in the hopes someone will turn in the crooks. They broke into Hair Divas early Friday morning by kicking in the door and shattering windows. Anne Davis said that store sells high-end, natural hair from India that is used for weaves, wigs and extensions and half of her valuable inventory is now gone.

In Newport Virginia, police are looking for three women who they say stole hair products on April 14th, from the Beauty Max located at 870 J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. The store is filled with different colored wigs and hair pieces. It is the same merchandise police say brought two women into the store Thursday afternoon. The store manager Tony Chong said, “I’ve been working here ever since we opened, so I feel like it’s my store, it’s crazy!”  This event started when the women brought four packages of hair pieces to the counter. The clerk turned her head for one moment. “Those two ladies grabbed the products and took off,” Chong said. Surveillance video shows the women running out the store. Chong said there was a getaway car waiting and he and other employees gave chase to the suspects. “I grabbed the car door, opened it and put my left leg in,” Chong added. Chong was dragged, but it stopped there. The owner of the store who was in a motorized scooter pulled in front of the car. “They tried to run over him with the car,” Chong said. Police say the driver hit the owner as she drove off. He was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. Employees were able to recover some of the merchandise.

Celebrities in the news: Donald Trump is making big news at the moment in the States, but not for business reasons. Donald recently declared that he intends to run as the Republican candidate for president. However his hair is making bigger headlines in the American Newspapers than he is and they feel that he needs to sort out his hair, as it looks like ‘something’ was just glued on. Regardless of the fact that he is a billionaire and obviously knows his stuff when it comes to money and owning property, maybe people will be proud to be an American again and for once, with a president who doesn’t smoke, lie about love affairs with interns, and doesn’t have to duck out of the way of a flying shoe. We know for a fact that Donald doesn’t wear any kind of hair piece and his hair is all his own. I guess we’ll just say he’s having a bad hair day (again)!
